Planeta Grecanico 2011

Planeta grecanicoThis is the same grape variety as Garganega, a variety we see in Soave, and a few other synonyms as well. This particular one is made in Sicily however, and known by its local name. For many years it was believed that the two grapes were different, as the flavours are so completely polar due to the climate. This Grecanico is ripe and perfumed on the nose, with an almost Viognier-like apricot nuance. The front palate is quite explosive – stone fruits, herbs and flowers, and a lovely viscous texture, again like a Viognier. Finish is leaner than you would expect for such a mouth-filling drop, and makes it a good wine for food matching – I’d love to see it with some lobster, butter and tarragon.
