It seems I have to find somewhere to stay less and less in Abu Dhabi. The city is expanding at such a rate, becoming so exciting, infinitely more livable, and I find more and more of my friends are moving there, and kindly offering food and shelter for the night where needed.

Abu Dhabi is definitely becoming a more exciting place to visit. So many developments are giving polish to their final touches, and we are now able to look at Yas and Sadiyat as more than just a construction site, a work in progress. Restaurants too are increasing in number and quality (although still some way off perfect). Gourmet Abu Dhabi is becoming a festival for food-lovers to watch, perhaps event nudging our Dubai food festivals a little – making us realise that this sister-city (or should we call it big brother?) has some very grand designs. As yet, there is still plenty that remains unfinished, and even undecided, but Abu Dhabi has certainly become a worthwhile place to tack onto the Middle-East tourist trail.

Traders is a Shangri-La owned and operated hotel, but in the more budget, 4-star segment. It’s one of the best value hotels in the city, and connected to one of the most luxurius (Shangri-La Qaryat al Beri).

Hotel review follows images…

Traders Hotel, Qaryat al Beri

  • Accommodation Style: four-star city-fringe hotel with resort aspect.
  • Rooms: 301 total: Superior 32 m2 to executive suite 59 m2.  Connecting available. Deluxe rooms very large and will fit 2 extra beds for families.
  • Price: From 275AED ($80US) for a double room in low-season. Deluxe rooms hover around 500AED in peak.
  • Facilities:Club lounge, beach, restaurant, bar, pool, poolside dining and bar, gym, minibar, free wifi, 24-hour front desk, Concierge service, Laundry, Meeting/banquet facilities, lift, disabled access, parking, air conditioning
  • Activities: beach and pool, spa at neighbouring Shangri-La, connected souk and restaurants at the resort, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque close-by, city 20 minutes, heritage village 30 minutes, Yas Island (Ferrari World, Water Park, beaches and restaurants) 10 minutes, and more.
  • Languages: Minimum English and Arabic. Often also Malayalam, Hindi, Urdu, Mandarin, Russian and Philipino, depending on staff shifts.
  • Perfect for: Families with young children, business trip
  • Also not bad for: Families with older children, girl’s weekend break
  • Pros: Incredibly good value for the quality of the offer, which is comparable to some 5-stars. Good quiet position but very close to everything you might want to see. Some facilities of the neigbouring (and 3-times-the-price) Shangri La are quite also available to guests. The souk with it’s restaurants and more means you might not have to leave at all. Lovely playground for the kids. Superb breakfast.
  • Cons: Pool a little small, beach water quality variable. No kids club either at Traders or Shangri La (the former is understandable, the latter is unforgivable). Breakfast wonderful, but only one price, and so if you are not going to hoe into the buffet, you might want to dine in your room.
  • Location: “Between the bridges”, just off all the islands. Very central but you’ll need to get in a cab to go anywhere. (map)
  • Nearest Airport: Abu Dhabi (15 minutes drive), also close to Al Maktoum International (Dubai World Central) – 1 hr.
  • Bookings: Via websitePhone: +971 2 510 8888, can often also be booked through at discounted rates (check the specials on the hotel website first though, particularly if you are a UAE resident.)

Rating: 9/10*

*A guide to ratings: These take into account the price, quality, service and the facilities, and in effect are a value rating.

  • 0-2/10 = exceptionally overpriced. Avoid at all costs, even if it means travelling to stay elsewhere overnight.
  • 3-5/10 = overpriced in respect to quality. Don’t stay unless there are no other options.
  • 6-7/10 = reasonable value. Check other options in the area just in case, but not a bad choice over-all.
  • 8-9/10= worth seeking out. Great value in respect to the offer, one of if not the best option in the area.
  • 10/10= super place. Stop what you’re doing, book a plane ticket and go there now.
