moncaro verdicchioThis wine is made in the hilly region surrounding Jesi, a series of fortified villages (Castelli) near Ancona in the Marche region of Italy. The grape variety’s name translates as “little green one”, referring to the green tinge of both the grapes and the wine produced, and is also known as Trebbiano di Soave, Trebbiano do Lugana and Turbiana. It’s a high acid wine, also good for producing sparkling wine, but it’s aromatic nature makes is a pleasant drinking table wine, particularly in this region.

This example is a pale green gold and crystal clear. It’s a very ripe style, and the usual aroma of apples is here replaced with banana and pineapple. There is a little funkiness that blows off relatively quickly. The palate is rich and tropical, with sweet mango and candy characters, and a lean finish with a touch of stewed apricots and bitter almonds that balances nicely. Lovely everyday wine.
